This case-based lecture highlights the prosthodontic decision-making process that underpins successful aesthetic rehabilitation. Beginning with a comprehensive clinical examination, the discussion progresses through smile analysis, occlusal evaluation, treatment planning, and restorative material selection. Pediatric Dental Specialist, Hospital Tengku Permaisuri Norashikin, Selangor
This topic provides an introduction to normal and abnormal orofacial myofunctional habits and their impact on craniofacial growth, occlusion, breathing, speech, swallowing, and overall oral function in children. It covers common dysfunctional habits such as mouth breathing, tongue thrusting, prolonged non-nutritive sucking (thumb sucking and pacifier use), low tongue posture, lip incompetence, and abnormal swallowing patterns. Participants will learn how these habits contribute to malocclusion, sleep-disordered breathing, temporomandibular dysfunction, and other functional impairments.
The session also introduces the principles of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy (OMT), an evidence-based, exercise-based intervention designed to retrain the muscles of the tongue, lips, cheeks, and face to achieve optimal oral resting posture and functional patterns. The lecture will discuss indications for OMT, patient assessment, treatment goals, multidisciplinary collaboration with ENT specialists, speech-language therapists, orthodontists, and paediatric dentists, as well as the current scientific evidence supporting OMT in improving oral function and serving as an adjunctive treatment for paediatric sleep-disordered breathing and orthodontic management.
Learning Outcomes: By the end of this session, participants should be able to: Recognise common orofacial myofunctional disorders and harmful oral habits. Understand the effects of dysfunctional oral habits on facial growth and oral health. Describe the principles and objectives of Orofacial Myofunctional Therapy. Identify patients who may benefit from OMT and appropriate referral pathways. Appreciate the role of multidisciplinary management in achieving long-term functional outcomes.
